We talked about the Nike FuelBand sometime at the turn of the year, where this particular rubber wristband is capable of tracking user movement, linking such data back to an iPhone application for readouts in real-time. Nike has apparently also decided that it is better to open up the beta version of its NikeFuel API to developers, as that might just speed up the way applications are developed with fans of the device helming such a project.
This makes it the first time Nike has done anything of the sort. Do bear in mind that the API is available only to developers who participated in the Backplane hackathon during SXSWi in Austin, Texas. Of course, this does not mean that wider API availability will not happen in the near future. In order to get a better idea of what this particular API is eventually able to do, the Shuffle app, for instance, creates radio stations that are based on location, environmental sounds, a user’s speed, the weather, and different forms of data in order to “know” just what song is meant to be played next.
